How to Choose the Right Therapist for Yourself or Your Child
Written By Alyssa Goff
Finding a therapist can feel overwhelming!
You might spend hours scrolling through websites, reading biographies, comparing credentials, and wondering:
"How do I know who's actually the right fit?"
Whether you're searching for support for yourself, your child, or your family, we want you to know something important:
The "best" therapist isn't necessarily the one with the longest list of credentials. It's the one who creates a space where you feel safe, understood, and supported enough to grow.
Start With Connection, Not Credentials
Degrees, licenses, certifications, and specialties matter of course, but the therapeutic relationship matters even more.
Research consistently shows that one of the strongest predictors of successful therapy outcomes is the relationship between the therapist and client.
Ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable talking with this person?
Do I feel heard and understood?
Does this therapist seem genuinely interested in helping?
Can I imagine returning week after week?
For children, parents might ask:
Does my child seem comfortable around this therapist?
Does the therapist connect naturally with my child?
Does my child feel safe enough to engage?
Therapy works best when there is trust.
Ask About Retention Rates
Here's a question most people never think to ask:
"What is your patient retention rate?"
Retention rate refers to the percentage of clients who continue attending therapy with their therapist after their first few months of treatment.
While no therapist is the right fit for everyone, strong retention rates often suggest that clients feel connected, supported, and are finding value in the therapeutic relationship.
At Coastal Counseling Associates, we're proud to maintain a client retention rate of approximately 98%, (between 5 clinicians! ◡̈ ) meaning the overwhelming majority of families who begin services choose to continue their therapeutic journey with us.
To us, that speaks to something important: people stay where they feel seen, understood, and cared for.
Look Beyond a Therapist's Specialties
Many therapists list dozens of specialties on their websites.
While experience is important, consider how a therapist approaches the work.
Do they view behavior through a compassionate lens?
Do they involve parents appropriately?
Do they see strengths alongside challenges?
Do they tailor therapy to the individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach?
At Coastal, our clinicians are uniquely trained as both licensed therapists and expressive arts therapists. This allows us to support healing through conversation, creativity, movement, play, mindfulness, and other evidence-based approaches depending on each person's needs.
Find a Physical Space That Feels Welcoming
Therapy isn't just about the therapist. It's also about the environment.
When you walk into a practice, ask yourself:
Do I feel comfortable here?
Does the space feel warm and welcoming?
Would my child feel safe here?
Does this feel like a place where healing can happen?
At Coastal, we've intentionally designed every aspect of our office to feel calm, inviting, and supportive—from our therapy rooms to our waiting areas and even our Coastal Sips beverage station.
Because healing happens best when people feel at ease.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions
A quality therapist will welcome your questions.
You might ask:
What experience do you have with my concerns?
How do you involve parents?
What does therapy typically look like?
How do you measure progress?
What approaches do you use?
Trust Your Gut
Sometimes a therapist looks perfect on paper but doesn't feel like the right fit.
Other times, you know within minutes that someone feels warm, authentic, and easy to talk to.
Trust that feeling.
Finding the right therapist is a little like finding the right pair of shoes. The credentials may look impressive, but if the fit isn't right, the journey becomes much harder.
